District Community Engagement Principles

Proactive Community Involvement: Key to meaningful engagement, proactive community involvement necessitates that District staff actively pursue community input by implementing initiatives to facilitate active and meaningful participation of residents and representatives of Valley communities in the decision-making process and in the implementation of effective air quality solutions by

  • Actively seeking the insight and viewpoints of community residents when developing clean air strategies
  • Providing effective tools, resources and opportunities for community residents and community-based organizations to identify issues of interest and concern

Equitable Community Access: With the Valley’s wide range of diverse communities, backgrounds, and capacity for engagement, District staff ensures we invite input from all communities by

  • Providing multilingual access to District air quality tools, public meetings, air quality announcements, and grant opportunities
  • Providing accessible venues for Valley residents to receive education and information about air-quality challenges and current District air quality actions

Community Outreach: As the scope and scale of the District’s community engagement efforts grow, it is important to ensure that outreach intentionally reaches the communities and populations that need it the most by:

  • Holding evening meetings in communities or virtually to allow for maximal resident participation, address resident concerns and suggestions, and take community input in real time
  • Working with community based groups to help identify those most impacted in communities and seek feedback on better addressing any potential gaps in outreach models
  • Taking a proactive role in providing access to air quality tools and information and providing essential education to explain the information they are seeing
